Alexandra Reviews Comedy 101 by Homemade Productions

If you want to see a funny show, do not go to see Comedy 101. It is by far the worst show I have ever seen. The jokes at best will produce only a smile and maybe a chuckle once or twice. In fact, the only one laughing will be the assistant director, she'll be sitting on the far right loudly laughing in hopes that the audience might start too.

The show's first mistake was structuring Comedy 101 as a college lecture. In its efforts to imitate a classroom environment as much as possible, it inadvertently succeeded in replicating the boredom of a classroom as well. The whole entire show consists of a professor lecturing the audience and his assistant interrupting once in a while in an effort to add some humor. Unfortunately, the assistant's efforts to be funny are always the same, slutty and extremely exaggerated. After about ten minutes, you just wish she would leave the stage. Most of the jokes are inappropriate, centering around erectile disfunction or alcoholism. While, such themes are usually funny, you will be surprised at how dry they can be.

I do give thumbs up to the cast's efforts, however. The role of the professor is excellently played. He is serious and has a presence around him that makes you believe he is a member of the academia. I also applaud the efforts of the assistant. She has to act out a lot of difficult physical comedy and she does a great job of imitating a drunk. The acting is very believable. In addition, there is great chemistry between the professor and his assistant, they are after all father and daughter.

I blame the failure of the show on the writing. Although the idea of exploring what laughter is, and what causes it, is interesting, it fails to be funny. It probably would make a fascinating lecture or workshop in a university, but never a comedy. It is filled with too many facts and too many melodramatic dry jokes. Perhaps, Mitch Hogue should continue his career as an actor and not a writer. I advise everyone to use their five dollars for something else that is actually worthwhile.
