Nina Reviews NY City Center Encores! Bash Concert

The night was full of laughs at the NY City Center Encores! Bash Concert.

There was a group of singers who sang a variety of songs, either individually, or in groups, ranging from the 1930s to the late-1960s. The most popular singer was Anne Hathaway, who played the title role in The Princess Diaries, and The Princess Diaries 2, and who sang two songs beautifully.

The orchestra occupied most of the stage -- which shows the importance of the orchestra in this concert -- leaving room for the singers and dancers to perform. There were only a handful of dances performed in addition to the singing, but the choreography was wonderful. The conductor, Rob Fisher, even joined in on the fun once, and there was also dancing on top of the grand piano, in the center of the orchestra.

The songs ranged from jazz to classical, and from comic to somber. While the humorous songs were entertaining, provoking laughter and giggles, most of the somber ones were dull, and dry. Luckily, there was a balance between these two different types of songs.

Jay Binder was in charge of casting, and rightfully so, because the singers were truly amazing. There were 21 singers in total; all dressed beautifully for their performances, thanks to costume-consultant Toni-Leslie James. The ladies were able to reach the highest pitch, and the gentlemen the lowest. They all sang with passion and brought the music to life.

Overall, the night was fun, though at times it did get boring. The musicians, singers and dancers performed wonderfully. If you like listening to songs from that time period, youÕd enjoy this concert.
