In the Q-Box: Diana Buirski
A people's tyrant. A virtuous assassin. A conspiracy to dethrone a God. In a modern Rome of blood-stained hands and savage mobs, Brutus is a patriot without an exit strategy. Is he an honorable man? This production of Julius Ceasar seeks out the heart of Shakespeare's famous play.
Julius Ceasar's Diana Buirski steps into this special Fringe-inspired Q-Box to answer our always informative, albeit mostly ridiculous, questions.
What's the best thing about Fringe?
|
Getting to create plays with my friends.
|
What's the #1 reason people should come see your show?
|
We make Shakespeare exciting and understandable. (Plus, if you see our Julius Ceasar, you'll sound really smart when your High School class discusses the play!)
|
Do you have any opening-night rituals?
|
I always eat sushi about 3 hours before the first show. (I've been doing this since the 10th grade!)
|
What are the craziest performance conditions you've had to work under?
|
When The Guerrilla Shakespeare Project started making plays together in graduate school, we didn't have a lot of free time. We had to use every spare minute to work on our own productions. We wouldn't even begin rehearsal until 11 o'clock at night. One time we came back from Christmas vacation and mounted an entire show in just 4 days!
|
How did you get involved with the arts?
|
My parents started taking me to see plays when I was very young. We saw the Miracle Worker when I was about 7 years old, and I became extremely jealous of the girl playing Helen Keller. After the performance I told my Dad, "I want to do that." He signed me up for acting classes right away.

THE STATS:
High school attended: Kent Denver, Englewood CO
Favorite Class: English
Next-up on Netflix queue: Spirited Away
Playing on your iPod right now: Apocalyptica. It inspires me to work on our adaptation of Julius Ceasar.
Favorite pizza topping: Broccoli
Last good book you read: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
All-time, hands-down favorite piece of theater: Angels in America (Parts 1 and 2) by Tony Kushner. My parents took me to see the first part in High School, and when I realized there was a second part, I begged them to buy me tickets for that evening. We saw the whole thing in one day. It was amazing.
Actor with least-bad portrayal of the title character in Batman: Christian Bale. Obviously. But within The Guerrilla Shakespeare Project, it's our Director Jordan Reeves. He has a fancy silver Batman belt-buckle that gives him an unfair advantage.
